Since arriving at Coulscott we have looked at all aspects of life here in order to reduce our carbon footprint. We are making steady progress and ask all our visitors to assist in this where they can.
What we have done to reduce our environmental impact:
Low energy light bulbs are in all fittings where possible.
All water is from our own spring, cleaned by UV light and tested regularly.
All waste from the plumbing is processed on site using our spring water and no chemicals.
The pool is heated with solar panels which has reduced oil use by 70%.
All cleaning chemicals where practical are eco-friendly.
Introduced an on line booking form.
Recycle all materials which the council will collect.
Provided all cottages with compost collectors which are emptied into a central compost system.
Regularly service all boilers to maintain their efficiency.
All wood provided for the wood burning stoves are from renewable sources and most are from our grounds.
Thick and/or lined curtains to stop heat loss.
Use local labour and recycled materials when they are available.
Reduce our car use by doing all errands in one go and planning ahead.
Growing a lot of our own vegetables, some of which is used in the food which is prepared for guests.
Buy most things from local shops and farms.
Providing free range eggs for guests from our very free range chickens.
Provide towels and bedding only for guests on the booking form.
Planted 1500+ plants, trees and hedging in 2009. All the hedging plants are native.
Hope guests will follow our lead.
What we hope that guests will do:
Not waste water as it is from a spring and does not replenish as fast as mains water.
Keep the pool door closed and the cover on when not in use, in order to conserve heat.
Collect all compostable material in the bins provided in the kitchens.
Recycle as much as possible.
Turn off all lights and appliances when they are not in use.
If the cottages are too hot turn down the heating rather than open the windows.
Dry clothes outside rather than use the tumble drier.
Use local shops and farms.
Reduce use of any chemicals.
Let us know how many guests will be in each house in order to reduce wastage of linen and towels.
Things we are hoping to achieve in the future.
Researching into, with the hope of installing some of them:
a.
Wind turbines.
b. Water turbines (feasibility study done).
c. Photo voltaic cells.
d. Air source heat pumps.
Some of the excess heat from the pools solar panels may be diverted into the cottages to provide some of their hot water.
Install solar panels for our larger houses hot water.
Much increased level of food self sufficiency.
Reduce our paper usage and use only recycled paper.
Use on-line banking and accept payments from same.
Research using sheep or goats to keep our rough grass areas short.
